On June 6, 2016, the Lincoln City Council approved ordinance #2016–851 amending section 9-7-4 of the City Code, Downtown Parking Regulations within the City of Lincoln.  The purpose of this ordinance was to help facilitate customer parking by allowing customers to park on the streets in front of businesses and to help with patrons to the government buildings find convenient parking for the in and out transactions.

Recently the Street Department erected new signage in the downtown area marking those areas designated for customer parking only between the hours of 9AM and 5PM.  The Police Department will now start to enforce those areas designated by the attached map.   Violations can be reported to the police department at 217-732-2151.

Customers are defined in the ordinance as: “Any person actively shopping at a merchant or conducting business at any government building in the downtown business district other than those that are employed at the business or government entity.”

Employees are encouraged to use the public parking lots off Pekin and Clinton Streets for long term parking. Employees are allowed by the ordinance to park on the street up to 30 minutes for loading and unloading only.

A person found in violation shall, for the first violation is punishable by a fine of twenty five dollars ($25.00). A second offense within a calendar year shall be punishable by a fine of fifty dollars ($50.00). A third offense within a calendar year shall be punishable by a fine of one hundred dollars ($100.00). The fourth and any subsequent offense within a calendar year shall be punishable by a fine of two hundred dollars ($200.00). Vehicles cannot be parked overnight or they will be ticketed. Any vehicle found to be parked on the street more than 72 hours will be towed.

I appreciate everyone complying with the ordinance to help make our city a friendly and inviting place to live and work!
