Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Can I just send an email or use Facebook to report a crime or provide information?
A: No. There are certain questions that need to be asked by a police officer. We also do not check emails/Facebook on a regular basis, so your message may not be responded to quickly. It is best to call using the appropriate phone number.
Q: I am the victim of a identity theft where the suspect is not in Lincoln. Do I file a complaint with the Lincoln Police Department?
A: Please read over the Federal Trade Commission's website for information about identity theft. Then complete a Federal Trade Commission complaint form. Print the completed FTC complaint form, print your credit report, and have available the paperwork that brought the identity theft to your attention and call the non-emergency line to request an officer.
Q: I keep receiving phone calls from an unknown source. Can I make a complaint?
A: Telemarketers often use the phone system to attempt to sell goods or services. Please put your phone number on the Federal Do-Not-Call Registry. If after you do this and continue to get calls, please contact the Lincoln Police Department on the non-emergency line to request an officer.
Q: How to do file a commendation for an officer for a job well done or to make a complaint?
A: Please come to the Lincoln Police Department, 710 5th St, Lincoln, IL, to file the necessary paperwork. Formal complaints require paperwork to be filed and the person filing the complaint is required by State Statue to swear to the truthfulness of the complaint. Anyone found to be filing a false report with the police will be charged under Illinois State Statute for Disorderly Conduct, a Class 4 felony.
The sidewalk that runs from your house to the street (if you have one) is your responsibility. The sidewalk that runs across the front or side of your property along the street is the City’s responsibility. You can contact the Street Department at 217-732-4655 or by email if you think the condition of your walk constitutes an immediate hazard and the Street Superintendent will come out and look at the walk to determine its condition.
If your sidewalk is not deemed an immediate hazard, but you feel it needs to be repaired, you will need to complete a Public Works Service Request Form. Your request will then be on file and work will be completed when time and resources are allowed.
The City does have a Sidewalk Reimbursement Program. If you choose to not wait for the City to perform the work, you may replace the sidewalk yourself. The City will reimburse $2 per square foot of materials used. Copies of invoices will need to be provided to the City for reimbursement.
For more information on this subject, you can review the City ordinances on Sidewalk Construction found in Title 8, Chapter 6 of the City Code (8-6-1 through 8-6-7).
You need a curb cut permit when you make a new driveway in an existing sidewalk curb. The curb cut permit is often part of a building construction permit. The City of Lincoln oversees curb cut permits, because curbs are on the City right-of-way. However, we review, approve, and issue the permits.
When you design your curb cut size and location, consider:
Tree and power pole clearances
The size and number of curb cuts allowed on your property
The required distance between your curb cuts and those on nearby property
A curb cut permit does not address parking and car storage or location, size, and number of parking spots.
We charge as basic $50 for each curb cut on all types of property.
To report a street defect, like a pot hole or a flooded street, use the following form which will be directed to the Street and Alley Superintendent or you may call 217-732-4655.
