Building And Zoning
Our Mission:
The Building and Zoning Department’s mission and goals related to the timely provision of public services to the public and the City’s government, in areas dealing with building permits, inspections, code compliance and citizen inquires.
These programs are intended to safeguard the safety, health and general welfare of the public from hazards attributed to the built environment. We believe in the equitable treatment for individuals regardless of circumstances and strive to enforce all building, zoning and City Ordinances in a fair and considerate manner. The primary goal of code enforcement is to establish voluntary compliance through contact, education and guidance with punitive action taken as a last resort.
The primary purpose of the Building and Zoning Department is the administration, management, coordination and enforcement of the City’s codes and ordinances relating to building, zoning, planning and code enforcement. Responsible for all phases of construction, permitting and inspections within the City.
The department performs technical plan review, issues permits and conducts field inspections for all construction projects ranging from utility shed to large-scale commercial projects. The review of building plans, issuance of permits and conduction of inspections are all done in an effort to protect health, safety and general welfare of City residents as well as to provide for the orderly development of the City.
Department staff also provide professional, technical assistance to the City Council, Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, Historical Preservation Commission and the TIF Review Committee.
The department also proactively addresses code enforcement matters that include accumulation of trash or debris, weed and grass growth, inoperable or unlicensed vehicles, and a variety of other exterior property maintenance issues.
